“Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.” John 5:19
Jesus demonstrates what it means to serve God’s purposes and to be agents of redemption in our world. Is the current state of affairs as it is meant to be, with little to see in the way of salvation and growth, or are we missing something? Was Jesus telling the truth when he said “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father”?. John 14:12
The writer of the letter to Hebrews tells us to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” Heb 12:1-2
What are the things that hinder us from doing what Jesus did, what sin so easily entangles us from running the race as he did? Why can’t we see what Father is doing and carry out those unique tasks that He has for each of us, both as individuals and in teamwork with our fellow disciples in our local church?
The only answer is surely that we as individuals and together as church need to turn to the LORD Jesus afresh and allow the Holy Spirit to show us what those sins and entanglements are that keep us where we are and bereft of the life, power and fruitfulness that He has promised. It could be painful and it will undoubtedly be costly but won’t it worth it to see the kingdom advancing with power in our region and nation?
